ATOL – what is it and when is it important?
Essentially ATOL is a bonding license that allows the holder (ie an agent) to sell flights. The holder of the ATOL license is bonded in the event of financial failure, ie financial arrangements should be in place so that you will be refunded your money or be financed to complete your holiday / return home in the event that your tour operator goes under. Note this only applies if you have purchased a flight inclusive package. It is great if you are booking packaged product eg flights + hotel in one place, but cover / financial protection is not applicable to any arrangements if you book the flights separately (eg with the budget airlines). Bottom line, only packages that include flights are covered - if you're still unsure ask your travel service at the time of booking or contact ATOL, details below.

If you are booking flights separately from your ground arrangements, eg you want to take advantage of a budget airline fare whilst booking your ground arrangements separately, ATOL cover (ie financial protection) does not / will not apply to your ground arrangements.

But with your flights sorted you should always book the remainder of your ground arrangements with an ABTA bonded agent like StagWeb, (because with StagWeb your ground arrangements will be financially protected). ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents & Federation of Tour Operators) is the highest and most professionally recognised and regulated level of consumer protection. For example with StagWeb client financial protection is provided regardless of location or flights, ie importantly you are covered for UK trips aswell. Rule of thumb - if it's a stag weekend and you're going to book the flights yourself, book the rest with StagWeb!
